Fantasy baseball: Final 2012 rankings

I know what you're thinking.

Another blog about fantasy baseball rankings?

Well, we ran our updated (again) rankings at News-Herald.com over the weekend (click here for the batters, here for the pitchers and here for the top 100 overall), and I wanted to explain a few of the key changes in the numbers between the N-H stories and the rankings that were posted on this blog.

-- We dropped Phillies second baseman Chase Utley from No. 5 to 8 at his position because of the news he would miss the start of the season with an ailing knee.

-- The Nationals' Michael Morse slipped three spots in the outfield (from 21 to 24) because of  a shoulder injury that has hampered his spring.

-- St. Louis' Chris Carpenter dropped from No. 23 to 35 at starting pitcher because of a "nerve irritation that has weakened his right shoulder." If the St. Louis Post-Dispatch's report from Friday that Carpenter likely will miss a couple of months is accurate, 35 is much too high. He should be drafted as a No. 5 or 6 starter at best in a 12-team league.

-- Royals closer Joakim Soria will miss the rest of the season because of elbow surgery, dropping him from No. 10 among the relievers to out of the rankings (obviously). After our rankings were published, we learned Reds closer Ryan Madson would also miss the season with an elbow injury.

With that in mind, Madson -- who had taken Soria's place at No. 10 in our rankings (the curse of No. 10?) -- is out and I would consider Seattle's Brandon League now among the top 20 in the bullpen after the recent run of injuries.

Before we go, remember Oakland and Seattle kick off the major-league season Wednesday and Thursday morning in Japan. In head-to-head leagues, those games will count in most leagues, and Week 1 will stretch over a ridiculous span of 19 days -- March 28 to April 15 -- since the remainder of MLB doesn't open the season until late next week, and the first full week of games isn't until April 9-15.

Fantasy football: Peyton Manning's impact

Peyton Manning supplanting Tim Tebow as the Broncos' starting quarterback is the type of story that is made for Twitter.

The jokes. The arguments. The nastiness.

It's all there.

Manning over Tebow is also very interesting from a fantasy perspective, as the QB who, prior to missing all of last season with the Colts, had never thrown for fewer than 3,739 yards and 26 touchdowns in a season is taking over for a QB who was frequently ripped by scouts and analysts, yet was a sneaky-good play in fantasy because of his rushing ability.

Depending on where Tebow lands in a trade, both could be fantasy options in 2012, but it's Manning who will be one of the most intriguing storylines of the season.

From 2006 to 2010, Eli's older, less-clutch brother averaged 4,328 yards and 31 touchdown passes per season.

Coming off four neck surgeries, how much faith will you have that Manning will be able to come anything close to those figures this season?

Until we see how Manning performs in the preseason and read the reports from Denver's training camp, we obviously will have no idea.

Just for fun, let's guess that Manning will be about 75 to 80 percent as good as the old Manning -- the one who had Reggie Wayne, Dallas Clark, Pierce Garcon and Austin Collie as options. In Denver, he'll have Demaryius Thomas, Eric Decker and maybe Clark, should the tight end sign with the Broncos, as many expect.

Is 80 percent of the old Peyton better than the likes of Eli Manning, Michael Vick, Ben Roethlisberger and Matt Ryan? For fantasy purposes, maybe.

That would put Manning in the Nos. 8 to 12 range at QB -- a low-end starter in a 10- or 12-team league.

There are three tiers at the top of the fantasy QB ranks. The first has Aaron Rodgers, Drew Brees, Cam Newton, Tom Brady and Matthew Stafford. The second has Tony Romo, Philip Rivers (assuming San Diego gives him enough weapons to make up for the loss of Vincent Jackson) and possibly the Manning brothers. The third has Vick, Roethlisberger and Ryan.

Manning, even at 80 percent, makes a much more defined impact on Denver's top two receivers -- Thomas and Decker.

With Peyton at QB, both should be fantasy starters in 2012.

Decker was the Bronco most hurt by Tebow's rise to the starting role. The second-year receiver had 45 receptions and eight TDs on the season, but he caught seven passes for 85 yards and zero TDs in the Broncos' last five regular-season games.

Thomas, meanwhile, was fantastic during the same stretch in which Decker disappeared. Thomas had 25 receptions for 448 yards and three TDs in the last five regular-season games, and had 10 catches for 297 yards and a touchdown -- that memorable 80-yard overtime score against the Steelers in the playoffs, a game in which Tebow almost single-handedly blew up Twitter -- in Denver's two postseason games.

If we're assuming Manning will be a productive fantasy QB, we'd have to believe Thomas will be a No. 2 fantasy receiver and Decker a decent No. 3 -- especially in point-per-reception formats in which he could fill the role of the pre-injury Collie of 2010 or 2004 Brandon Stokley.

Fantasy baseball: Updated top 100 overall

I'm still torn on Albert Pujols vs. Miguel Cabrera now that the latter will be a third baseman.

For fantasy purposes, that's an excellent position change for Miggy. For comedic purposes -- also excellent.

We'll give The Machine a slight edge, which we feel even better about as he makes the switch to the American League, but we understand if you prefer the Hot Corner/Comedic stylings of Miggy Cabrera at No. 1.

I'm not torn on Ryan Braun being the best outfielder, even if many prefer Matt Kemp, Jose Bautista or Jacoby Ellsbury. Since the reigning National League MVP isn't facing a 50-game suspension, we believe he's the most productive, and safest, selection at his all-important position.

The three players whose value has dropped the most since our initial top 100 are Mets third baseman David Wright, Red Sox outfielder Carl Crawford and Phillies first baseman Ryan Howard. All did so because of injury, and Howard is no longer part of our top 100.

Without further delay, our updated list. Good luck in your drafts, and may Jose Bautista be with you.

Fantasy baseball: Updated 2012 rankings -- pitchers

There are only two significant changes in our updated pitching rankings -- young starters Matt Moore of the Rays and Cory Luebke of the Padres jumped 18 and 24 spots, respectively.

Moore was ranked by Baseball America as the game's No. 2 prospect entering 2012, and all he has done in his minor-league career is post a 2.64 ERA and a ridiculous 700 strikeouts in 497 1/3 innings (12.7 Ks per nine innings). He fanned 15 in 9 1/3 innings in three appearances with the Rays as a rookie in 2011, and, assuming he remains a part of Tampa's deep starting rotation when the regular season starts, he should be considered a No. 4 fantasy starter.

Luebke, meanwhile, was a reliever in 29 of 46 games with the Padres as a rookie in 2011. Once he was moved into the rotation, he had a 3.31 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and struck out 9.9 batters per nine innings. He's a low-end No. 4 starter in a 12-team league, with his value aided by the Petco Park factor.

Without further delay, our starting pitcher and closer rankings. We'll be back later in the week with our updated top 100 overall. We encourage you to wait with bated breath.

Fantasy baseball: Updated 2012 rankings -- batters

Changes, we've made a few.

Since we began our series of fantasy baseball rankings with the catchers on Jan. 27, Ryan Braun has had his 50-game suspension overturned on a technicality, Ryan Howard and Carl Crawford have experienced setbacks in their attempts to come back from injuries, and your Cleveland Indians have signed first baseman Casey Kotchman.

OK, the last one doesn't matter. But the other are or could be significant, especially Braun, who vaults from No. 15 to No. 1 in the outfield, and is ranked third in our overall top 100.

Without further delay, our updated rankings for batters. Stats are from the 2011 season, and we have players ranked only at the position at which they are expected to spend the most time this season, not all positions at which they are eligible.
